Abstract

What you will learn:

The sustainability reporting landscape for mining is evolving rapidly, with increasing expectations shaped by global frameworks such as ISSB (including emerging Canadian developments including the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) and Canadian Sustainability Reporting Standards (CSRS), TCFD, and TNFD. At the same time, mining organizations face growing scrutiny regarding the credibility of sustainability claims, including the implications of Canada’s anti-greenwashing legislation (Bill C-59).

This interactive short course provides a practical, mining-focused approach to understanding ESG reporting requirements and translating sustainability commitments into operational practice. Rather than treating reporting frameworks as disconnected requirements, participants will explore how key standards align, where they differ, and how a structured, risk-based approach can simplify reporting while strengthening business resilience.

Using practical examples and applied tools, the session will explore how mining organizations can identify material sustainability issues, prioritize risks, support stronger governance and decision-making, and generate reporting outputs that are credible, defensible, and meaningful.

Sarah Gordon

Prof. Dr Sarah Gordon is an internationally recognised facilitator, educator, and thought leader in risk management, sustainability, and raw materials, known for her ability to design and lead engaging, people-centred learning experiences across sectors and geographies.

A sought-after training professional, Prof. Gordon has played a key role in developing curricula and delivering courses for organisations including the Institute of Risk Management and Edumine. She regularly designs and facilitates training programmes, workshops, and executive roundtables at major international conferences such as PDAC, CMA, Mining Congress, the Future Minerals Forum, and Resourcing Tomorrow. Her facilitation experience spans formal teaching, interactive workshops, and high-level panel discussions.

Prof. Gordon’s lectures and facilitated sessions have been delivered to audiences ranging from UN bodies and government and policy officials, to corporate C-suites and operational teams on site, across a wide range of industries. 

Her facilitation style is strongly people-centred: she is highly skilled at fostering participation, drawing out the expertise in the room, and creating collaborative environments where diverse perspectives can be shared and translated into practical outcomes.

She is the Founder and Facilitator of Responsible Raw Materials, an annual global conference established in 2020 that convenes hundreds of speakers and participants from industry, government, finance, civil society, and academia. Through this platform, Prof. Gordon curates and facilitates high-impact discussions, panels, and collaborative sessions that tackle some of the most complex challenges facing the minerals and materials value chain.

In addition to her facilitation and teaching work, Prof. Gordon is the CEO and co-founder of Satarla, a global risk management and sustainability consultancy established in 2014, which has grown to over 150 specialists supporting hundreds of clients worldwide. She is a Professor of Practice at Imperial College London, where she lectures in risk management and sustainability.

Prof. Gordon has contributed extensively to professional education, including updating the Institute of Risk Management’s Certificate in Risk Management in 2022, and she is a regular contributor to books, papers, and industry publications. She has served in voluntary leadership roles for the Geological Society and currently sits on multiple Boards, experience she draws on when facilitating Board-level workshops on risk appetite, governance, and strategic risk.

She works across extractives, life sciences, agriculture, financial services, charities, and government, bringing a facilitative approach that bridges technical expertise, strategic insight, and meaningful engagement.
